If you’re an NBA team intent on building your team through the NBA draft lottery, “tanking” must be a part of your game plan, right? All the big name, upper echelon players have already been taken. So, what’s left? Second tier players and the NBA Draft Lottery. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, speaking on “The Dan Patrick Show” admitted that “The lottery is not working.” “We put the lottery in place precisely to prevent against tanking and that was well over 30 years ago because teams seemingly had this huge incentive to finish at the bottom because the value of these draft picks is so high.” “We’ve tinkered with the draft lottery five times in the last 30 years, but we’re still not at a point where it’s frankly working.”

The thing I like about Adam Silver is his honesty. He’s not going to come with some sort of sugar-coated, politically correct analysis. He’s right, this is a problem! There are a handful of legitimate NBA title contenders (and I’m being kind when I say that) and every other team is fighting for table scraps. This makes for a pretty uneventful regular season and a very predictable post season. As an NBA fan, I’m about to get bored quick! If I’m an NBA owner I don’t want to have to overpay for mediocre talent, that’s talent that gives me no chance to either make it to the playoffs or advance beyond the first round. What am I supposed to do? Build through the draft and hope that I can pick up a cast-off or two from a Super Team that just added another Superstar to their roster? If I’m an NBA player, I’m LOVIN’ this, cause either way I’M GONNA GET PAID! I don’t need no stinkin’ ring SHOW ME THE MONEY.
