BULLDOGS HUNKER DOWN IN SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE

Most all of the talk surrounding Georgia’s spring football practice will be about the quarterbacks, but the development of the offensive line is the most important storyline. This group needs to take a big step forward this season, if the ‘Dogs are going to make some noise.

But yes, all this quarterback competition chatter is interesting. Best case scenario: Jacob Eason gets pushed by Jake Fromm and blossoms into a better quarterback this spring. I doubt Coach Smart and Coach Chaney really want to go down the freshman QB road, again.

So, what does Eason need to improve this spring? Jacob needs to improve his play in the pocket. When he has to reset, his footwork needs to be more consistent. That should help improve his accuracy. He also needs to develop some touch on his short to intermediate throws (make the ball easier to catch for his receivers). Hopefully, his understanding of the game has improved, after watching video of his performances this offseason. He needs to improve his “game-manager” skills. There is a lot to work on.

Eason’s job will be much easier, if this UGA O-Line can step up. There are jobs up for grabs, up front. Who is ready to take them? I’m spotlighting Ben Cleveland this spring, in order to see where he is at. He’s had a full year to get comfortable, which should help him get into the competition. Coach Pittman has a lot of developing to do, with these young players. As I see it, the season rides on how good this O-Line can be.

One other position group that needs to step up is wide receiver. The Bulldogs need to get improved play out of that group. Is there an X-WR that can ball? Need to find one. Godwin should be more effective working out of the slot. Ridley needs to come on strong. Maybe one of the freshmen can emerge as a player.

At running back, look for Chubb and Michel to be watching Holyfield and Herrien getting a lot of reps this spring. The two young backs need to work, in order to develop.

The defense appears to be solid, with a lot of guys back. So, it’s the offense that going under the microscope this spring. Can’t wait to see this.
